With U.S. President Donald Trump’s sudden weekend suspension of Canadian trade negotiations, it marks the second time that Prime Minister Mark Carney has promised that an end to the trade war is just over the horizon, only for the White House to pull out the rug at the last minute.
Earlier this year, the Carney government repeatedly told Canadians to keep their eyes fixed on July 21 as the day when a deal would be struck to once again normalize Canada-U.S. trade relations.
The date had emerged from the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Alta., where Carney had announced on June 16 that Trump had promised to “pursue negotiations toward a deal within the coming 30 days.”
