A thug who robbed a lone 86-year-old woman as she walked home from church has been jailed for two years.

Abel Ghebrehiwret, 29, preyed upon Joan Hay in Glasgow's Possilpark on June 30 2025. Ghebrehiwret grabbed and pulled so hard at Miss Hay's handbag that the strap broke.

The callous thief made off with the bag which he later abandoned but kept her purse which contained £150.

In 2021, Ghebrehiwret was jailed for two years for mugging an 89-year-old woman. He pounced on Mary Taylor at her flat and made off with her handbag which contained £70.

Days later, Ghebrehiwret targeted 66-year-old Jeanette Robinson and robbed her of her handbag.
