The London Fire Brigade (LFB) responded to an emergency call on Tuesday afternoon, October 28, at approximately 1:18pm, regarding a flat on Barking Road in Upton Park. Two adults and two children were taken to hospital after complaining of a chemical smell emanating from the property. Unfortunately, one of the children later died in hospital. In response to the situation, around 12 residents from nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution while emergency services managed the incident. Fire crews from Poplar, Millwall, Euston, and other stations were deployed to the scene. The LFB confirmed that specially trained firefighters conducted a systematic sweep of the affected flat to identify any hazardous materials and ventilate the area. The incident was declared under control by 4:23pm. The Metropolitan Police are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, with the fire brigade assisting in their inquiries. In a statement, the LFB expressed their condolences, saying, "Sadly, a child has died following a hazardous materials incident in Newham." They reiterated their commitment to supporting the police investigation as more details emerge. This incident has raised concerns about safety in residential areas, and further updates will be provided as the investigation continues.
