Montrealers who think the city does construction work over and over on the same streets: it’s not your imagination.

The Gazette has reviewed a handful of recent roadwork projects to understand how and why this phenomenon occurs. Here is Case No. 3.

Jean-Talon E. REV, Villeray—St-Michel—Parc-Extension borough

The city built the first phase of its latest Express Bike Network (Réseau express vélo, or REV) on Jean-Talon St. in 2024. The 1.7-kilometre route is between Boyer St. and 1st Ave. and runs one-way eastbound.

The city will have to come back at some point to dig up the street because an 18-inch underground water main that runs from Boyer to De La Roche St. dates from 1911. Sewer lines between Chambord and Marquette Sts. also require rehabilitation. Lead service lines also need to be
