Canada’s federal government is moving ahead with one of the largest military procurement projects in the country’s history — a plan to purchase up to a dozen new submarines for the Royal Canadian Navy.

Prime Minister Mark Carney will visit Hanwha Ocean’s facilities in South Korea on Oct. 30 to inspect the company’s proposed vessel. The trip follows a tour of Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) shipyard earlier this year, during which the other finalist competed for the multibillion-dollar contract.
