Community advocate Emma Durand-Wood has been elected as the new city councillor for Elmwood-East Kildonan, winning Saturday’s byelection with 1,567 votes — a clear lead over her closest rival, Abel Gutierrez, who received 887.
Durand-Wood finished ahead of five other candidates in the seven-person race. Braydon Mazurkewich placed third with 842 votes, followed by Christian Sweryda with 740, Carmen Prefontaine with 644, Kyle Roche with 230 and Zekaria Selahadin with 67.

The byelection was called following the death of longtime councillor Jason Schreyer earlier this year.
