Following a request from local First Nations, B.C. government will indefinitely shelve the legislation that would enable the dissolution of Vancouver’s elected park board, just three weeks after introducing the bill.

The province’s decision not to advance the legislation, confirmed Monday night by Municipal Affairs Minister Christine Boyle, was followed by finger-pointing between the minister and Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim about which level of government still had more work to do with the local First Nations.

Last week, elected leaders from the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations sent a letter to Boyle, saying the MST Nations’ support of the proposed governance change was conditional on a “process to collaborate on the proposed amendment language,” as explained to the province in
