Big Penny has claimed its latest victim.
A semi truck hauling beer traveling northbound on Pennsylvania Avenue slammed into the bridge just north of the Potter Park Zoo in Lansing just before noon on Tuesday, Oct. 28.
Lansing police blocked the northbound lanes as a wrecker crew worked to pull the truck free from bridge’s metaphorical jaws. No one was hurt despite the dramatic damage to a portion of the truck’s trailer that was bent into an accordian-like shape.
The physical crash counter sign that is displayed below the cartoonish eyes and teeth mounted to the top of the bridge will have to be updated to 24 “trucks munched” this year, 103 since 2004.
