TYLER, Texas — A Tyler man who was in the Smith County Jail after being arrested for allegedly assaulting a family member died last month following a medical emergency.

Rashah Andre Williams, 39, was brought to the jail on Sept. 24 after Tyler Police Department officers arrested him for assault causing bodily injury to a family member. At the jail, Williams became agitated and started pushing against officers who were trying to escort him inside, according to a Texas Attorney General death report.

Jail employees escorted Williams to a padded cell where he was screened by a medical team while the Tyler police officers prepared his booking paperwork. Several minutes later, Williams suffered a medical emergency. Workers attempted to provide medical care, and he was ultimately taken to a Tyl
