LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is suing the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and its secretary, Brooke Rollins, for "unlawfully" halting SNAP benefits amid the ongoing government shutdown.

SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, is the largest food assistance program in the nation, helping low-income individuals. Nearly 13% of Michigan households, or 1.4 million people, rely on SNAP assistance.

On October 10, the USDA issued a letter to all state agencies and agency directors who administer the SNAP program, instructing them to pause the distribution of benefits for November.
