THUNDER BAY — Zeus the bear is back in his old stomping grounds.

After a long road trip that began Monday at a rehabilitation centre in Sprucedale, Ont., the 7-year-old bear was freed north of Thunder Bay on Tuesday morning.

He was discovered about a month ago with a gunshot wound to the shoulder that resulted in a serious infection.

After Ministry of Natural Resources staff captured him, the animal was transported to the Bear With Us sanctuary, east of Parry Sound.

Founder Mike McIntosh told Newswatch a veterinarian treated him and prescribed a three-week course of antibiotics.

"The infection is now gone, and the wound has healed. We wish this bear a long life, free in the wilds of the District of Thunder Bay," he wrote in a social media post.
