LOUISVILLE, Ky. — As Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) works to address a major budget shortfall, Superintendent Brian Yearwood confirmed layoffs are possible.

JCPS faces the difficult task of reducing spending by $132 million by next fall.

During a news conference Tuesday morning, Yearwood said JCPS is considering certain reductions, like a hiring freeze, but school programs would remain mostly untouched.

“As far as school programs, we will maintain the quality programs in our schools – those will not be cut,” he said. “We have zero plans to cut programs that are working, programs that we are seeing our students thriving in in our schools, that is not happening.”
