The friend and former lawyer of murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi was sentenced to one year in federal prison Tuesday for filing fraudulent tax returns and omitting more than $1.8 million in income, including money from a Syrian charity in Metro Detroit.
Asim Ghafoor, 55, of Ashburn, Virginia, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Susan DeClercq in federal court in Detroit five months after pleading guilty to one count of filing a false tax return, a felony that carries a maximum three-year prison sentence.
