Hurricane Melissa is one of the strongest storms to ever make landfall in the Atlantic Basin – tied with Hurricane Dorian in winds and the Labor Day hurricane of 1935 in the Keys with pressure.
Melissa made landfall in southwestern Jamaica near New Hope with estimated maximum sustained winds of 185 mph and an estimated minimum central pressure of 892 mb, the National Hurricane Center said on Tuesday afternoon.
The 185 mph maximum sustained winds are the second-highest recorded in history behind Hurricane Allen in 1980 with winds of 190 mph.
The 892 mb minimum central pressure is tied for third with the 1935 Florida Keys storm. Hurricane Wilma in 2005 has the record for the lowest central pressure with 882. This content is imported from Twitter. You may be able to find the same content i
