TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV/Gray Florida Capital Bureau) - All 43 Democratic members in the Florida legislature are urging Governor Ron DeSantis to declare a state of emergency on food insecurity as nearly 3 million Floridians face losing SNAP benefits due to the federal government shutdown.

With no end in sight to the second-longest government shutdown in history, November 1 SNAP deposits are not happening. The Democrats want DeSantis to unlock state money to help Florida families bridge the gap.

“No Floridian should go hungry,” said Rep. Fentrice Driskell.

Driskell said the declaration would qualify for emergency funding, and the state’s emergency fund is at its highest level it can be.
