CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Charleston City Council could approve the re-burial of human remains that were unexpectedly dug up during a construction project in May.
A total of 78 gravesites, with no known grave markers, were identified at 635 King Street, according to a City of Charleston meeting agenda. Bethany Cemetery is where the city council could approve their relocation. In the meantime, the remains have been stored in a climate-controlled facility.
Brian Turner, the president of the Preservation Society of Charleston, said they informed the city and owner of the possible existence of a cemetery associated with the former St. James United Methodist Church before construction.
