Prunella Scales, who has died aged 93, spent most of her career performing in serious dramas by the likes of Chekov and Shakespeare.
But she was best known for playing the brilliantly cutting, Sybil Fawlty, the long suffering wife of hopeless hotel boss Basil, in the sitcom Fawlty Towers.
Only 12 episodes were ever made but repeats and international sales brought her global recognition and acclaim for the role.
In later years, she starred in Great Canal Journeys with her husband Timothy West, but dementia forced her to step away from that series in 2020.
We take a look back at her life.
