CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - Forbes Home ranked Charlotte the 2nd worst in America when it comes to commuting.
Politicians are using that ranking to push a 1-cent sales tax that will raise more than $19.4 billion over the next 30 years to help fund Charlotte’s transportation needs.
Currently, Mecklenburg County’s sales tax is 7.25% - if the tax is approved, it will rise to 8.25%. Proponents believe this sales tax will help reduce commute times and create jobs. Opponents believe this sales tax will be a burden to taxpayers and are skeptical that projects will get done.
The money generated from the tax will be divided like this - 40% going toward road improvements, 40% for rail transit projects, and 20% to bus and micro-transit services.
