The McIntosh County Sheriff’s Office and the District 25 Violent Crimes Task Force are investigating a homicide after a woman was found dead near Council Hill.
Sheriff Kevin Ledbetter said deputies responded to a welfare check around 1 p.m. involving a car parked on the side of the road near the intersection of Highways 266 and 72, south of Council Hill.
A deputy found a woman dead in nearby woods. Investigators said she did not have gunshot wounds but had multiple other injuries. The exact cause of death has not been determined. Ledbetter said investigators cannot yet confirm whether the woman owned the car, but said she was seen coming from it.
Deputies later found a male suspect inside a barn on private property owned by someone else. The man was taken into custody.
