ATLANTA — Atlanta officials are quietly launching an initiative to get a new hospital built on the city’s west side. This comes after the Atlanta Medical Center closed three years ago this week.

The site in southwest Atlanta – not far from the BeltLine -- now houses a hodgepodge of businesses. A medical provider quietly purchased it months ago. Now it could be the site of a new hospital.

"I hope it comes to fruition because we definitely need something down here," said Quadrus Black of Adair Park, who has to drive north to get medical attention now.

The city endured the high-profile closing Atlanta Medical Center three years ago in the Old Fourth Ward. That site is under demolition to make way for a housing and retail development.
