Evie Parts never imagined that running for Swarthmore College would become such a painful experience. The 22-year-old distance runner says her battle to compete as a transgender woman has left her exhausted, anxious, and unsure about her future in the sport she loves.

“There’s so much on my mind that nobody else has to think about,” Parts told Teen Vogue. “Everybody else is thinking about race strategy, and I’m thinking about whether I’ll be able to race.”

Her voice carries exhaustion, the kind that comes from constantly having to justify your existence.

In August, Parts sued Swarthmore College and the NCAA after they removed her from the women’s track team. She claims the decision broke state and federal laws, arguing that the NCAA, as a private organization, lacks the legal authority
