Ministers should apply a windfall tax on energy networks’ “excess” profits to pay off households’ energy debts, a cross-party group of MPs has said.

The Energy Security and Net Zero (ESNZ) Committee said that the companies had made £4bn in “excess profits” which should be used for an “energy debt relief scheme”.

The intervention by the committee – which is dominated by Labour MPs – comes at a time when Rachel Reeves is considering measures to ease cost of living pressures in next month’s Budget . New Feature
