COPPELL, Texas — The proposal to close Coppell ISD’s Town Center Elementary School is off the table for now.

After hours of debate Monday night, trustees voted down the district’s campus consolidation plan , which would have shuttered Town Center to help offset an $8.5 million budget shortfall.

When the motion failed, the crowd erupted in applause. Parent Brent Billington said the moment was emotional for families who moved to Coppell because of Town Center’s charm.

“It feels like you’re in a storybook,” he said. “It’s like a kid’s book, like Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood.”

Trustees acknowledged that the financial strain isn’t going away. Closing the school would have saved about $1.4 million annually.

“It all, no matter what we do, is going to be painful,” said Trustee Nichole Bentle
