PHILADELPHIA — The two teams most people associate with Rick Tocchet’s hockey career are the Flyers and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
But not necessarily in that order.
Although Tocchet played more games as a Flyer and made the Stanley Cup final twice here, he achieved even greater glory while competing in the Steel City. During his three-year stay as a player, he won a Stanley Cup (1991-1992) and a season later had his best offensive output with 48 goals. As an assistant coach, he raised the Cup twice with the Penguins, in 2016 and 2017.
So while Tocchet had coached against the Penguins with other teams, Tuesday night was the first time he had stood behind the Flyers bench and strategized against his old team out west.
