CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Division of Fire confirms a man is dead after falling into the waters of Lake Erie and drowning while fishing off the rocks behind Edgewater Yacht Club.

Officials say rescue crews arrived at the scene just before 8:15 p.m. Tuesday after receiving word that the man had fallen by the rocks.

Witnesses said he had been struggling in waves as high as 6 feet tall, and according to the fire department, he had already died by the time first responders got there.

Paramedics, Cleveland Metroparks police and members of the U.S. Coast Guard attempted to assist firefighters in recovering the man's body on Tuesday night.

However, before they could do so, the remains were swept away by the waves.
