Once seen as a disease of the elderly, stroke is now affecting more young Indians than ever before, with doctors warning of a sharp rise in cases among people under 40. The culprit: lifestyle habits, high stress, and lack of timely medical attention are driving this worrying trend.
A stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is interrupted, cutting off oxygen and nutrients and causing brain cell damage. This can lead to paralysis, speech problems, memory loss, or even death.
Dr. Vishwanathan Iyer, Neurosurgeon at Zynova Shalby Hospital in Mumbai, said that he has seen a 50% increase in stroke cases among adults under 40. “In a month, 5 out of 10 young adults come in with symptoms like facial drooping, arm weakness, or speech difficulty,” he said.
