A former police officer has died in a hit-and-run incident at a showground on the New South Wales north coast.

Emergency services were called to a showground on Coldstream Street in Ulmarra at 4:50pm on Monday after reports a 55-year-old woman had been struck by a car.

Coffs-Clarence Police Acting Superintendent Detective Guy Flaherty said the woman was walking her dogs before she was hit.

"A witness observed the victim and a male in a confrontation at the showground," Detective Flaherty said.

"We believe the victim has been struck by the vehicle [and] the driver has left the scene.

" Sadly, despite the best efforts of emergency services, the 55-year-old has lost her life. "

NSW Police confirmed the victim was a former police officer.
