A tenant has been left fearing they are being exploited after their landlord charged them $2,800 to fix a drain blockage.

The international student, who lives in Melbourne, was slapped with the extortionate bill after the landlord arranged for a plumber to work on a blocked bathroom drain.

After being handed the invoice, the student took to Reddit for advice on whether the charge "was normal".

"I’m currently living in a student accommodation in Melbourne," they wrote alongside pictures of the damage, which appeared to have resulted from a build-up of hair.
