Automaker Volkswagen has started construction of North America’s biggest EV battery plant in St Thomas, Ont., as the Canadian auto sector continues to reel from plans by Stellantis and GM to move or halt production of key vehicle models in the province.

Once in operation in 2027, the three sprawling factories at the $7 million manufacturing complex , being developed by VW-subsidiary PowerCo, will roll out enough batteries every year for about one million EVs.

“Electric vehicles are the future of the global automotive sector,” Frank Blome, CEO of PowerCo, said in a statement. “Spearheading such a significant investment positions Canada at the forefront of innovative EV battery production.”
