Clerk of Parliament Fiona Kalemba has announced that Dr. Kondwani Nankhumwa of the People’s Development Party (PDP) will not participate in the election for Speaker of Parliament.

According to Kalemba, her office received five letters of intent from candidates for the position, but parliamentary rules stipulate that the number of candidates must not exceed four.

The five submissions came from Sameer Suleman, Peter Dimba, Sandram Scott, Lasken Vigaro, and Dr. Kondwani Nankhumwa.

Kalemba explained that Nankhumwa’s name was withdrawn because his letter of intent was received last, after the first four candidates had already filed.

A total of 221 Members of Parliament are expected to participate in the Speaker election, with two members having withdrawn from the process.
