The Godfather Part III is often held up as a grade-A example of how not to do a sequel. And while it comes nowhere close to joining the first two movies in cinema's pantheon of undisputed masterpieces, Francis Ford Coppola's 1990 effort is by no means bad. The Godfather Part III could be more accurately described as a decent gangster movie that simply falls below the lofty expectations set by its title.

The Vatican-based plot is compelling enough, and more space is made for the undervalued trio of Kay, Connie, and Al Neri. Andy Garcia's Vincent is an inspired addition, and while Sofia Coppola's Mary performance attracted waves of criticism, the fact she replaced Winona Ryder in a last-minute switch must be taken into account.
