MINNEAPOLIS —

The University of Minnesota will no longer host high school commencement ceremonies at the Twin Cities campus, according to an email sent Tuesday.

The U of M contacted high schools around Minnesota, saying the changes will go into effect in the spring of 2026.

"Following a review that looked at past commencement resource needs and the University's operational priorities, it was decided that it was no longer sustainable to host these 20+ events each Spring," the U of M stated in the email.

The U of M plans to reach out to impacted high schools with information on alternate venues.

Although not mentioned in the email to districts, the change comes after a shooting took place at Wayzata High School's graduation ceremony at Mariucci Arena in May .
