A veteran Farmington police officer who served as a school resource officer has died by suicide.

According to the Farmington Police Department, officer Pete Zajac "took his own life" late Tuesday. He is survived by his wife and three children.

"Our entire police department family is in mourning and our hearts go out to his entire family," the department wrote in a Facebook post. "His presence within our department and our community as a whole will be missed."

Zajac was an officer with the Farmington Police Department for 15 years and also a school resource officer for Farmington Area Public Schools for the past two years.
