CALIFORNIA CITY, Calif. (KGET) -- The dusty desert town of California City is home to fewer than 14,000 residents, creating a debate around the new detention center.

"I would say that we are fighting for dignity, not detention. We are fighting for humanity and we are fighting for our funds that we that we pay into the government to be better funded," said Nisha White, a community organizer for the Dolores Huerta Foundation.

The ICE detention facility here is owned by CoreCivic and can hold more than 2,500 people making it the largest detention facility in California. Senate Bill 29 requires California cities to notify the community 180 days before a private company starts using a local building for immigration detention.
