There are few second chances at the peak of American politics.

Only one vice-president, Richard Nixon, has lost a presidential race then staged a successful comeback, winning the presidency in 1968.

Now another California lawyer wants to be given the same opportunity — of a second tilt at the White House — or what's left of it.

Former vice-president Kamala Harris told me in an interview for 7.30 about her 2024 campaign memoir, 107 Days, that Americans are turning up to book events to listen to her ideas.

"Tens of thousands of people are showing up for it," Harris said.

"I think there's an appetite for the conversation that I'm having with the American people."

It is clear that "conversation", while not stated bluntly, is an invitation to Harris's presidential campaign 2.0.
