BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —
At The Community Kitchens in the basement of St. Andrews Episcopal Church, six days a week, they open their doors to anyone who wants a hot meal and a warm, dry place to eat it. They're gearing up to see many new faces over the coming weeks as tens of thousands of folks just in Jefferson County won't receive food stamps for next month.
Executive Director Kimberly Speights said, “We have a director of kitchen operations, and she and I have met and we prepared for the influx of guests that will be coming in. So she's, you know, kind of trimmed her menus to cater, to make sure that we can meet those excess numbers.”
Speights said it’ll be challenging, but she's hoping the community will be able to help them help others. She added, “Just reaching out to our partners now,
