MONROE, Conn. (WTNH) -- The Monroe Police Department believes it has enough evidence to charge a suspect in the 1977 killing of 8-year-old Renee Freer -- but because of the statute of limitations, her killer will never be charged.
Renee was killed on June 22, 1977 in the woods behind her home. Last week, the department announced that it had closed the 48-year-old cold case -- but an arrest warrant for first-degree manslaughter was declined because the suspect cannot be charged under the law. Now, Renee's loved ones are working to change the law itself.
Police said the prosecution for manslaughter is subject to a five-year statute of limitations, which would not apply to a murder charge. The state's attorney considered murder charges due to the severity of the crime, but the law at the ti
