SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - MoDOT emphasizes the need to make roads safer by simply putting phones down as the state observes “Buckle Up Phone Down” day.

The campaign emphasizes the importance of seat belts and addresses distracted driving. Statewide, more than half of those killed in crashes were not wearing seat belts.

More than half of drivers using cell phones in Missouri traffic crashes were 22 years old or older. MoDOT expresses concern about the number of road deaths this year.

“More than half the time, the person killed by a distracted driver is someone other than the distracted driver,” said Jon Nelson of MoDOT. “So this is not an issue of, you know, personal choice or individual liberties.
