BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - Days away from the suspension of SNAP benefits due to the ongoing government shutdown , more people than ever may soon be relying on local food banks.

Thousands of federal workers are already going without pay. Right now, 1 in 6 people and 1 in 5 children are food insecure in central Alabama — but that’s not including those impacted by the shutdown. And with federal funding for food programs cut earlier this year, organizations like the Central Alabama Food Bank are working to make every dollar count.

“We want everyone to know our mission is the same, our commitment is stronger than ever to ensure that everyone has access to food,” said Ginger Pegues, the Director of Development at the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama.
