Prison officers at Cessnock Correctional Centre have walked off the job after an inmate, who bashed four of their colleagues”, was given a “slap on the wrist”.

It’s understood Cameron Welsh viciously assaulted the quartet at the Hunter facility earlier this year, leaving them with sickening facial injuries.

All four were hospitalised, with two never returning to work again.

As a result, Welsh was transferred to Goulburn High Risk Management Correctional Centre, or “Supermax” as it’s known, and isolated from other prisoners.

But, on Wednesday 29 October, a magistrate refused to add any time to his sentence, meaning he’s set to be released back into the community as early as this week, according to the Public Service Association (PSA).
