NEW ORLEANS — As a , state fire officials are warning residents to follow home heating safety tips and check smoke alarms.
Chief Bryan J. Adams, Department of Public Safety Principal Assistant, says winter sees the most home fires and the highest number of deaths.
“Winter is traditionally the busiest time of year for home fires, and tragically, when we experience the highest number of fire-related deaths,” said Chief Adams in a release.
So far this year, 69 people have died in 51 residential fires in Louisiana — 15 more than at this time last year.
“Every family needs to be aware of the potential fire hazards associated with home heating and take steps to prevent them," he said.
The State Fire Marshal also emphasized the importance of working smoke alarms.
