KENT, Ohio — Kent State University has officially removed the interim tag from Mark Carney, naming him the 24th head football coach in program history.
The announcement was made on Thursday by Vice President and Director of Athletics Randale L. Richmond.
"Since taking over as interim head coach, Mark has instilled belief, togetherness, and a winning culture into our football program,” said Richmond. “The way he's positively impacted this team, this department, this campus, and this community, he's earned the right to lead this program."
Carney was elevated to interim head coach in April 2025 following the termination of then-head coach Kenni Burns. He has since guided the Golden Flashes to a 3-5 overall record and a 2-2 mark in Mid-American Conference play this season.
