Imagine if you couldn't read a restaurant menu, your favorite book, or a street sign. That's the reality about 1 in 4 adults in Central Florida who reads at or below at 5th grade level.

The Adult Literacy League, a nonprofit in Orange County, is working to change that statistic by empowering Central Floridians to thrive through literacy and education.

Thursday, the organization hosted its annual fundraiser, Reading Between the Wines, at the Orlando Science Center. WESH 2's Christina Watkins, a children's author, served at the emcee.

This year's featured guest New York Times Bestselling Author Kristin Harmel. She lives in Central Florida with her husband and son and talked about why it's important to change the narrative surrounding adults who may struggle to read.
