Tasmania has the dubious honour of being Australia's gun theft capital with more firearms being stolen per capita here than in any other state.

Gun ownership is also relatively high in Tasmania, likely due to the fact that much of the state is rural or semi-rural.

Assistant Commissioner Adrian Bodnar said that with more than 37,000 firearms licenses and over 155,000 registered firearms in Tasmania, vigilance around firearm safety and compliance was incredibly important.

"Our officers work tirelessly to remove dangerous weapons from circulation and hold people accountable for firearms crime, because community safety is our highest priority," Assistant Commissioner Bodnar said.

More than 2000 guns are stolen every year in Australia, according to new research by The Australia Institute.
