OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. (WKRG) — Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office deputies are warning residents of an investment scam that has already affected multiple people.
According to an OCSO news release, the victims in total have lost over $1.1 million due to "fraudulent cryptocurrency investment scams."
Officials said these victims met the scammer on social media, and the scammer initiated a conversation about the victim's interest in a new type of cryptocurrency.
The scammer then texts the victim on a third-party app and asks them to send money via a "bank wire transfer with a SWIFT code to an overseas bank or to a cryptocurrency exchange account."
The victims are also told to use a fake website that shows the victim's "cryptocurrency balance."
