COLUMBIA, S.C. — Call it fate or call it luck, but one mix-up by a store clerk ended up winning a Midlands woman $500,000 on a South Carolina Education Lottery scratch-off card.
The woman was at the N. Main Street Piggly Wiggly grocery store in Columbia and tried to point to the $10 scratch-off ticket she wanted to purchase. Instead of her choice, the clerk handed her a different $10 ticket by accident.
“I just kept it,” the winner told South Carolina Education Lottery officials. “It was a blessing that has changed my life.”
The odds of winning $500,000 in the Feeling Lucky? scratch-off game are 1 in 1,500,000. Two top prizes remain in the game.
For selling a winning ticket, the Piggly Wiggly received a $5,000 commission.
