PHILLIPSBURG - On paper, Newark Central enters Friday’s NJSIAA North 2 Group 4 quarterfinal football game at Maloney Stadium as one of the most versatile offenses Phillipsburg High School will face this season.

The Blue Devils (6-3) go into the New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association game with 1,390 yards passing, for 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions. On the ground, they’ve gained 1,487 yards and 13 TDs.

The offense runs through sophomore quarterback Taylor Zahyir, who has 14 passing scores while also running for 222 yards and four more TDs.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

The Blue Devils run an odd front on defense and will cover up P’burg’s nose guard and use its two outside linebackers to rush. They’ll sometimes blitz up to seven players.
