ALBANY, Ore. (KPTV) - A man walking his dog was hit and killed by an Amtrak train late Wednesday afternoon, according to the Albany Police Department.

The incident happened at about 4:16 p.m. near the Queen Avenue crossing.

Police said witnesses reported a man and his dog had gone under the lowered crossing arms and around a freight train that was stopped on the adjacent track. A southbound Amtrak train on a separate track then hit the man as he tried to cross.

The man, identified as 28-year-old Joseph VanZandt, of Albany, died at the scene. Police say his dog did not appear to be hurt and was released to a friend.

Police said they would like to remind all community members to obey railroad crossing signals and to never attempt to cross around lowered gates or stopped trains.
