LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Halloween is less than 24 hours away and as you grab bags of candy to pass out to trick-or-treaters, you may also want to get some non-food items.

Allergists say 1 in 13 kids have a food allergy, so filling up their bags with safe treats can be difficult.

“Reactions can range, too, from mild to severe anaphylaxis,” said Kristen Evans, an APRN at Bluegrass Allergy Care.

Common allergens in candy

Tree nuts, peanuts, milk and eggs are among the most common food allergies. All of these can be found in some of the most popular candies and chocolates.

“Those are responsible, too, for 90% of the food allergy reactions, but there’s 200 allergens out there that have been identified,” said Evans.
