[ALTOONA, Iowa] — The government shutdown threatens funding for Iowa's Head Start program, impacting child care resources for families in need.
Paige Chickering of the Save the Children Action Network of Iowa emphasized the program's significance.
"Iowa has one of the highest percentages of both parents in the workforce at about 74%," Chickering said. "This is a huge issue not just for the kids or the parents but for the Iowan economy."
Chickering explained that the Head Start program is crucial, especially in rural areas where child care options are limited.
"Head Start is a really effective program. It's really a lifeline for a lot of kids and families," she said. "For many families, Head Start is the only option for childcare in their area."
